Description: One of the greatest unrecognised musical geniuses in this country, Stu Burns never knew his parents and was brought up by his maternal grandparents along with a brutal older brother. He began his working life down one of Northumberland's coal pits in the 1960s, where, in between mocking him for his stutter, the other miners would bring transistor radios, guitar amps etc. for him to mend. By the 1970s, using his own, custom built amplifiers and effects he could, according to the New Musical Express, "Out-Hendrix Hendrix". In 1997 an embolism in his brain caused extensive damage, in particular to his speech centres, resulting in a two-year incarceration in a mental institution. Although he returned home again his life was a constant fight against depression. Stu died in 2003.
